Attractions:

Central Market

The first generation of Central Market opened in 1842. Having undergone four generations of transformation, it is now a Grade III historic building. From its construction and operation to its closure and eventual demolition, it has weathered many storms. In 2009, the Central Market was formally handed over to the Urban Renewal Authority for conservation and revitalisation. It reopened in 2021 with a design that blends modernity with nostalgia, most notably the terrazzo grand staircase at its main entrance. Today, the Central Market embraces the concept of ‘Playground for All’, regularly hosting themed exhibitions and offering historical guided tours. Visitors can not only learn about its history but also gain insights into its conservation efforts, architectural style, and design. For instance, the design of the stalls and the nostalgic ‘egg lamps’ reveal how original elements were preserved, along with their origins and creative concepts, offering a multi-faceted exploration of the market's unique character. Why not pay a visit to Central Market on your next day off and experience the unique ‘market culture’ of yesteryear with your children?

Tai Kwun

The Barracks Building at the Parade Ground within Tai Kwun has long served as office and logistical space for the Central Police Station by Wpcpey 下載

The Central Police Station Compound dates back to the mid-19th century, formerly comprising the Central Police Station, Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison. All three structures are now declared monuments in Hong Kong. Following the completion of its revitalisation, the complex operates under the name Tai Kwun and has been progressively opening to the public since 2018. Many historical installations remain preserved within Tai Kwun, offering children insights into Hong Kong's development in law enforcement, the judiciary, and corrections. While preserving the original structures, two contemporary buildings – the Jockey Club Contemporary and the Jockey Club Cube – have been newly constructed within the complex. These serve to promote contemporary art and provide the public with a platform for leisure, entertainment, and artistic exchange. Additionally, Tai Kwun offers free guided tours for the public, ideal for families to explore the historical significance, the creative stories behind the artworks, and the concepts behind the exhibitions.

PMQ

PMQ, standing for Police Married Quarters, was formerly Central School and Police Married Quarters. Like Central Market, the married police quarters are classified as Grade III historic buildings in Hong Kong. PMQ has preserved the stone steps and walls of Central School for public display, while repurposing the quarters into exhibition spaces. These showcase the home design and daily life of former police families, bringing bygone culture vividly to life in an accessible manner. Parents may bring their children to participate in historical guided tours, allowing youngsters to learn historical titbits in a relaxed manner.

These heritage sites bear witness to Hong Kong's historical transformations and shoulder the responsibility of cultural transmission. They serve as time capsules encapsulating Hong Kong's history, worthy of exploration by future generations to understand the city's narrative and perpetuate its cultural legacy.

It is recommended to commence your tour at Central Market, then ascend via the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator, which connects to Tai Kwun. Along the way, you will pass not only PMQ but also historical buildings such as the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum and Man Mo Temple. Parents can take this opportunity to explore another facet of Hong Kong with their children.
