[5S Digital Parenting] If you want your child to learn well, you must first lead by example!

Children living in the digital age are constantly surrounded by electronic devices, often becoming more familiar with technology and the internet than their parents. Sometimes, with just a few taps here and there, they can effortlessly solve problems you struggle with. Electronic devices are incredibly versatile, enabling online learning, shopping, making friends, entertainment, and searching for all manner of information – making life far more convenient.

However, the benefits and drawbacks of these tools depend entirely on how they are used. If left unchecked, children may become addicted to the internet, leak personal information, or fall prey to misinformation – all of which can be detrimental to their development! Conversely, if parents fail to properly educate their children on responsible digital usage and instead demand they stay offline, these youngsters may find themselves at a disadvantage compared to their peers when it comes to learning opportunities and problem-solving skills.

How should one manage their children's online activities?

  1. "Stop playing on your phone/gaming all the time!"
  2. "Don't believe everything online – it's fake!"
  3. "Don't meet up with people you've met online – it's dangerous!"
  4. "There are so many counterfeit goods online, why not just go shopping in person?"

Have you ever said any of these things to your children? It's natural for parents to worry about their children's online activities. However, as mentioned earlier, electronic devices are practically essential in modern life. With e-learning becoming increasingly prevalent, it's unrealistic for parents to expect their children to be completely disconnected from the internet.

Teaching children digital literacy is not something you can delegate! Parents should lead by example, mastering ‘digital skills’ themselves to effectively guide their children's development. Parents can learn about the online world and the proper attitudes towards using electronic devices, becoming more knowledgeable than their children about technology and the internet. Adopt an open and positive approach to helping children navigate media, supporting and equipping them to explore the online world while cultivating their ability to make sound decisions.

Parents’ “5S Digital Skills”

Just as children learn digital literacy through school computer lessons, parents likewise require courses to master electronic device usage and technological trends. In light of this, EdCity has drawn upon US educator Mike Ribble's nine-element theory of “Digital Citizenship”, Dr Yuhyun Park's eight elements of “digital quotient”, and the Education Bureau's nine competency domains of “Hong Kong Student Information Literacy”. These have been synthesised into five essential digital skills for parents, each beginning with the letter “S” – collectively termed the “5S”. This framework provides digital literacy tips for every parent, enabling them to navigate alongside their app-savvy children and confidently tackle the diverse challenges of the digital world.
