Look after your children, but don't forget yourself!

Only parents who are well-balanced themselves can provide children with more stable, warm love and companionship. Self-care needn't be difficult. EdCity has compiled ten simple self-care tips to help parents recharge and boost their spirits amidst busy lives!

Self-Care Tips

Tip 1: Steal Moments of Leisure

Try going to bed 15 minutes earlier than usual, or take five minutes to close your eyes and relax between tasks, giving your body time to “breathe”.

Tip 2: Exercise During Breaks

When ferrying children about, deliberately quicken your pace for a brisk walk. While doing chores, sway your hips and hum a tune. Let movement naturally seep into life's fragmented moments, finding small joys amidst the hustle.

Tip 3: Seek Help Candidly

If feeling exhausted, communicate openly with your partner or family about your fatigue and specific support needs. For instance: ‘Could you help with the children's homework today?’ ‘I'm feeling rather worn out today—shall we dine out?’

Tip 4: Build a Support Network

Join online or offline parent communities to establish a network of mutual support and shared experiences with fellow parents.

Tip 5: Be Your Own Best Friend

When self-reproach arises after a mistake, try comforting yourself as you would a dear friend:

Tip 6: Practice Gratitude

Before bed, take a few minutes for a gratitude ritual. Reflect on 1-3 small moments of happiness from the day, such as: family time during an outing, a new flower blooming on the windowsill, your child washing a cup without being asked...

Tip 7: Imperfection is perfectly fine

Allow imperfection to exist: the house can be temporarily untidy, meals can be simpler. Don't let perfectionism drain your last ounce of energy.

Tip 8: Cultivate Interests

Set aside 15-30 minutes daily for activities you enjoy: painting, reading, crafts, online courses, jogging, documentaries, etc. Use this time to rediscover or develop personal hobbies.

Tip 9: Bravely Say ‘No’

When necessary, don't hesitate to explain to your children:

When children witness their parents practising self-care, they learn the value of caring for themselves.

Tip 10: Family Mutual Support

Integrate self-care into your family culture! When you notice your children or partner feeling low, proactively share responsibilities to create space for them to unwind or relax. You could also engage in activities together that soothe mind and body, such as going for walks or watching films.

A parent's self-care is the greatest love they can give their children

Loving your children begins with loving yourself. Only when your own cup is full can love flow endlessly to your family. Seeking support when needed is also an act of self-love. Beyond these tips, you may explore emotional support services and mental health resources provided by other organisations when required.
