When children start using mobile phones and setting up social media accounts, many parents may wonder whether they should give them more freedom or provide more guidance and supervision. Many parents use different apps or built-in mobile phone features to understand and manage how their children access the internet and use social media. EdCity understands that parents want their children to develop self-discipline, but may also be concerned about them encountering inappropriate content, making friends with strangers online or accidentally downloading apps that include in-app purchases.

Helping children develop healthy online habits does not always have to begin with a lecture. Parents can first familiarise themselves with the supervision settings available on popular social media platforms, and then combine these tools with everyday conversations to gradually build mutual understanding with their children. Meta’s safety toolkit for parents and educators includes practical tips on discussing online safety with children, covering topics such as cyberbullying and privacy. It also provides guidance on setting up and using Meta’s safety features, including Teen Accounts and Family Centre, and introduces local resources to help parents better support their children’s online experiences.

EYEYAH! × Meta Digital Interactive Dialogue Cards
In addition, Meta and EYEYAH! have jointly launched the Digital Interactive Dialogue Cards, an interactive platform designed for teenagers aged 13–18, as well as parents and teachers.
Through five interactive scenarios, users can explore different aspects of the online world, including managing social media feeds, thinking beyond the pursuit of more “likes”, navigating online social spaces, addressing cyberbullying and developing self-discipline in their use of social media. The platform encourages users to think critically and listen to different perspectives. It also helps them better understand the built-in privacy and safety features of Meta Teen Accounts, enabling them to lead a healthy digital life.

Digital Parent Navigation Ambassador Programme (Chinese only)
Digital Parent Navigation Ambassador Programme
In addition to downloading the toolkit and trying the interactive platform, parents and schools may wish to take a further step by joining the Digital Parent Navigation Ambassador Programme. EdCity is a supporting organisation of the Digital Parent Navigation Ambassador Programme, organised by Meta, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and the Hong Kong Association of Computer Education.
The programme is designed for representatives of parent–teacher associations across Hong Kong. It will equip educators and parents with deeper knowledge and practical experience, helping families begin conversations with pre-teens and teenagers about navigating the online world safely.
The training also covers Teen Accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, as well as parent-managed WhatsApp accounts for children under the age of 13.
Content of the training includes: parent–child communication skills; digital footprints and online safety risks; practical conversations about screen time, cyber safety and healthy digital habits; and hands-on practice using Meta’s safety features.
Participating parents and educators will also be able to use the relevant training materials and the EYEYAH! Digital Interactive Dialogue Cards, making it easier for them to share knowledge about online safety and healthy digital habits within their schools and parent communities.
For parents, digital tools are only a form of support. What matters most is maintaining open communication with their children. When children understand that their parents are not simply trying to “monitor” them, but are hoping to develop healthy online habits together, trust and a sense of security within the family can grow more naturally.
