1. What Is A ‘Digital Footprint’?

As we walk along the beach, we invariably leave behind footprints of varying depths and widths. By observing the size and shape of these footprints, others can trace your movements. Similarly, the traces we leave behind when engaging in various activities online constitute what we term “digital footprints”.

Every action we take online—browsing websites, logging into accounts, searching for information, sharing photos or videos, posting content, or clicking “like”—is meticulously recorded. In this era of big data, the internet functions like an infinitely expandable container, storing all user information within its confines. Should users neglect to manage their privacy settings diligently, this data may leak out, potentially being exploited for commercial gain or falling into the hands of malicious actors.

2. 「網絡足印」的用途

Though seemingly insignificant, these digital footprints prove invaluable to commercial enterprises. By tracking location, browsing history, purchase records, and other data, companies analyse user preferences and usage patterns. This explains why online shopping systems frequently recommend products recently viewed by the user. Sometimes, after searching for something on Google, social media immediately displays a series of advertisements related to that topic. This is no coincidence; it stems from AI continuously analysing users' preferences and habits to facilitate targeted advertising.

3. 「網絡足印」的危機

Do not assume that logging out of accounts or shutting down computers guarantees safety. Personal data and passwords have already circulated within the digital realm and remain vulnerable to theft at any time. Do not assume deleting old posts permanently erases records; these texts or media may well have been archived elsewhere. If we fail to safeguard our digital footprints diligently, we risk facing the following crises:

  • Personal data theft
  • Identity impersonation
  • Online doxxing
  • Financial or reputational damage

4. How to Protect Our ‘Digital Footprint’

The online world is an extremely transparent platform where data leakage cannot be entirely prevented. However, we can adopt the following recommendations as habits to safeguard our digital footprint and minimise online risks.

Manage Privacy Settings

All social platforms feature ‘privacy settings’ allowing users to control who can access their posts, comments, profiles, and other information. While default settings often permit sharing with ‘friends or followers,’ you may modify these to restrict certain users from accessing or viewing your content. Additionally, users should manage their social platform's friend request settings, such as requiring approval before anyone can follow your account. This helps prevent suspicious accounts from hijacking your content.

Use a VPN

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) establishes an encrypted channel between the user and the server. All data transmitted through the VPN is encrypted, effectively preventing data leaks or theft. Furthermore, a VPN conceals the user's IP address, preventing internet service providers from tracking their location.

Safeguard Account Passwords

Avoid using birthdates, telephone numbers, bank account details, or passwords as login credentials, and change them regularly. Passwords should ideally incorporate both upper and lower case letters alongside symbols to enhance security. Additionally, refrain from logging into any accounts via public networks or shared mobile devices.

Clear Browsing History

After using your browser, remember to clear your browsing history and cookies. Cookies are files that record your digital footprint, such as account names and passwords. While cookies offer convenience, they also pose risks and can be easily monitored. Alternatively, you may opt to use an incognito window, which leaves no traces or records, thereby eliminating the need to delete browsing history and cookies.

Search For Yourself

Why search for yourself? Regularly searching for your name online allows you to identify which personal details or photographs are publicly accessible. Should you discover any impersonation of your account or misuse of your personal information, report it immediately or notify the website administrator to have the relevant content removed.
